The Austin A35 is a van used by Wallace and Gromit. It first appeared in the feature film Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit, and has been their primary vehicle since. It was originally light blue, but later appeared in cream and pale green.
Description[]
The Austin A35 is a small family car made by Austin between 1956 and 1968. The A35 van owned by Wallace is a van model that, over its life, has undergone several changes depending on Wallace's intentions.
The van has presumably had a hard life even before Wallace bought it, owing to the many rust patches and small dents all over it.
Features[]
Like previous vehicles owned by Wallace and Gromit, it has been given several gadgets and contraptions. Some are simply modern touches, such as a driver airbag in the steering wheel.
More ingenious additions include a starter, a mechanical arm that comes out from the front grill with a starting handle due to the A35 not having an electric starter.
Appearances[]
Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit[]
The Austin A35 Van first appeared in the Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit as a van that was used by Wallace and Gromit when they were running Anti-Pesto. At this time, the van is a light blue and has the registration HOP 21T.
A Matter of Loaf and Death[]
The same van, or possibly a very similar second van, appeared in A Matter of Loaf and Death, now having a two-tone cream and pale green paint job (cream body with pale green lower body and roof) and being rebranded as "Top Bun Traditional Bakery", with the slogan "Dough to Door Delivery" on the back door and the registration DOH NUT5.
The roof has also been modified from the standard flat roof to a high-roof style for more storage capacity and the section of roof above the front cab can be opened for when Wallace and Gromit are wearing their tall chef hats.
Other appearances[]
The van appears in promotional media for Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit, such as the video game.
The van appears in the commercial Jubilee Bunt-a-thon, having a similar design to A Matter of Loaf and Death, except it has no business logo.
The van appears in the 2021 game Wallace & Gromit: The Big Fix Up as the vehicle they use for their new Spick & Spanners business, except it is now entirely beige.
Trivia[]
- A black version of the van can be seen in The Wrong Trousers and A Close Shave, as well as the Cracking Contraptions episodes "Shopper 13" and "The Soccamatic".
- Nick Park owned an A35 and was sold at auction on eBay for Wallace and Gromit's charity Wallace & Gromit's Children's Foundation.
