The Labour Assisting Device, or L.A.D. for short, is one of Wallace's inventions who first appeared in Wallace & Gromit's World of Invention. Made mostly from a kitchen bin, he is a robot (though not necessarily a male) who assists Wallace with his laboratory as a substitute for Gromit when the latter cannot do the work. It most prominently appeared in the World of Invention episode "Home Sweet Home", where it was made to replace Gromit, who becomes jealous of it. At the end, when Wallace tries reprogramming it as an "afternoon tea-throwing robot", Gromit, while Wallace is not looking, steps on the bin pedal at the base of the robot and pours some tea from his own mug into the robot's currently exposed circuitry under the now-open lid, causing it to uncontrollably throw things at Wallace.

He later appears in Wallace & Gromit: The Big Fix Up where Wallace constructs a gigantic version, known as the BIG LAD.

Trivia[]

  • The LAD, possibly along with other robots (such as the Cooker or Autochef), bears resemblance to the Daleks from Doctor Who. The scene in which Gromit accidentally gets his mug stuck on its eye references an episode in which the Doctor malfunctions a Dalek by placing his hat on one's eye.
    • Additionally, Peter Hawkins (who voiced the Daleks) was originally casted to voice Gromit in A Grand Day Out.
